NYSUT Member Briefing - Oct. 26, 2018

Pallotta: Don't give up your voice — VOTE Nov. 6

It's troubling that, in this greatest democracy on Earth, only about half of eligible voters actually go to the polls on Election Day, Andy Pallotta said in this week's radio commentary. In some years, it's less than half.
In this crucial mid-term election year, we are proud to endorse - and enthusiastically work for - candidates who will be our advocates in Albany and Washington ... and who vote in ways that benefit middle class families, public education, health care and labor - regardless of their political party. (Above, NYSUT members in Rockland County get the word out to re-elect state Sen. David Carlucci on Nov. 6.)

Syracuse summit promotes 'Take a Look at Teaching' initiative

NYSUT's first in a series of "Take a Look at Teaching" summits will kick off Oct. 30 in Syracuse. In an interview on Capitol Pressroom radio, NYSUT Executive Vice President Jolene DiBrango and Syracuse TA President Megan Root say the goal is to engage teachers, students, higher education faculty and state policymakers in a dialogue on how to inspire a new generation to become teachers and help diversify the profession. Union strong at annual Community College conference

Solidarity, union strength and the fight against anti-union forces were key motivators at the 40th annual NYSUT Community College Conference. Among the topics: how to better serve adjuncts; proposed state funding changes; how to address women's issues in the union; how to reclaim the promise of racial equity; members' rights and responsibilities in Title VII and IX; how to use member surveys; and how to collaborate for LGBTQ solidarity.
